Stormy Seas

Monday October 19
When reports of a Basking Shark came through on the CB, we dashed to Porthcressa - nearly bowled over by the wind. The sea was tumultuous, huge waves crashing against the distant rocks. We could not spot the dorsal fin despite those on Peninnis Head and Morning Point doing so. Very frustrating. After shopping we returned to the flat and news came through again - and we didn't see it this time either, nor did anyone else on the beach. We did see a Bonxie though.
At about 2.30, we rang Spider and he took us to Longstones to view the moths caught last night on display there. He wanted to see the moth too so, drove right up to the back door. He actually questioned why we were out at all in that wind. One moth , the Blair's Mocha, is very scarce, the Kent Black Arches is not but very interesting for us.Pam used my camera to photograph them in the tube.

We walked back via Carreg Dhu gardens and a Firecrest, saw some more Redwings but little else. News of Gulls at Porthcressa took us there yet again, to the Little Porth end, where we saw a Med and a Common Gull for the Scilly list. Morning Point watchers now reported a large Turtle species making its way across the bay. More frustratiuon - and no telescope this time either. The chances of seeing a small head in those seas were slim indeed. That didn't stop us trying ! Let's hope the wind brings in some good birds.
