A Flighty Cattle Egret

Sunday October 18

Reports of a Minke Whale and a Basking Shark moving west off Peninnis took us to Porthcressa. Too late....The Buzza Tower track was closed for some reason so that idea was out. We ended up walking to Lower Moors intending to try for the Wryneck on the airfield. Just as we got near Shooters Pool, the CB shouted news of a Cattle Egret in the Telegraph area. Back to the main road and Spider wasn't answering his phone - Duncan doesn't work on a Sunday. Next stop Porth Loo, waiting for further news of the bird. Now at Trewince Farm. Up the hilly Porth Loo Lane, it flew again. Back to lunch at the Porth Loo seat. Now at Longstones. Off we set for Rocky Hills.....it flew again. We gave up and went back to Lower Moors via the nature loop ( we saw 5 Redwings here) and Shooters Pool where a Jack Snipe was feeding.

Nothing from the hide, just the green yuk. The bird was now on Porthhellick Pool! We rested on Old Town Beach seats enjoying the view despite the lack of good light. It's one of our favourites.

Time to trudge home via the school and Dump. Let's hope it's still around to-morrow and Spider is working, the weather is due to worsen with a deep low coming in from the Atlantic. We also added Sparrowhawk and Merlin to-day. A and B went to Tresco and saw little of note.
