'New' parts of St Mary

Wednesday October 21
Later than planned as A and B decided to come with us to Mount Tudden Farm and Battery. Spider dropped us off for the shortish walk to a pine belt at the edge of the sea south of Watermill, our first visit to the area. It was half an hour and a heavy shower before the Red-breasted Flycatcher showed well -- as long as knees were bent. Lovely little bird. The view was good too as long as we were sheltered from the brisk wind.

After returning to the tarmac, another 'new' route, along Kitty Down which leads to the pumping station at Higher Moors. The first part of the path was a wide cart track which soon degenerated to a narrow muddy way between wet grass and hedgerows. The sun disapppeared, the sky turned gunmetal grey, the wind howled and it pelted down. A christening for our new coats. We sheltered under a tree at first but, tired of that and went on down a very steep and muddy narrow path to the road. A first and last I think!
A and B went on to Old Town, Pam and I walked to the first hide where we had to wait for a seat before eating lunch. A Merlin whizzed by, Swallows hunted and a spooked Water Rail scuttled into the reeds. A Jack Snipe was also on view.
We returned via the Loop Trail. Cow pats should have given us a hint.... at least 20 of the planks in the boardwalk had been smashed, very dangerous. That also explains why a man was dealing with the electric fence around the paddock. We had a Lesser Whitethroat call and zip across the path too.
Spider kept us waiting 10 minutes before the welcome ride back to the flat.
Watching TV woth a cuppa and a mince pie, a wonderful rainbow arced across the Town Bay. Pam took this photograph.
