A Good Day to visit Tresco

Sunday October 25
No taxis on Sundays on St Mary's, that and the fact that we hsdn't yet visited Tresco, Pam's favourite island, prompted us to do so.Kingfisher left at 10.00, 15 minutes early, but then crossed the Road very slowly due to a powerful swell from the west which hit us broadside, causing an impressive roll. A leisurely walk towards the Great Pool, we'd decided to visit the concrete hide, overlooking Simpson's Field, first. Sitting on a seat at the end of the pool about 50 metres from the hide, we spotted a birder running towards us shouting something about a wagtail into his phone. The CB burst into life, a first winter Citrine Wagtail on Simpsons with 5 White Wagtails. Excellent, we were there in 5 minutes. Viewing from the road is restricted by trees so I descended into the small hide with its 3 adults and 3 small children getting in the way. I had excellent views of the bird before we left to allow others access

Just a few birders on the island to-day, we were amongst the first half dozen to see it. Many others arrived on the later boat, the Osprey.

We walked on to both other hides, lunching alone at the David Hunt before returning for the 2.15 boat to Mary. We added a dozen trip ticks, mainly ducks and, only had one sharp shower.

Tresco's garden flowers are a tribute to the mild Mediterranean type climate. This Bottlebrush, an Australian native, still had some open flowers.

A successful and enjoyable day - shame Man U weren't as fortunate against Liverpool.
