Barton Broad

Monday April 6

Both of us rather weary this morning, me from lack of sleep (sciatica) and Pam from her ongoing virus. Nevertheless, responding to a pager message, a mid morning drive to the disabled car park at Barton Broad. The main parking area is about a mile away. Parking on the grassy verge, a warden drove up and asked us if we would please move to one of the disabled spots as he wanted to mow the grass ! We questioned this and he said we could park there any time, he wasn't fussy, he understood the problem of the long walk. Excellent.

There's a very good boardwalk through alder carr to the viewing platform over the Broad. Chiffchaffs singing all round us, Cetti's shouting loudly and, as always, unseen, a Treecreeper moving silently up a narrow trunk and then the platform. The latter is built onto 10 metres of liquid mud. It feels safe enough......So many GC Grebes.

About a dozen Little Gulls, 3 Common Terns and a song from a Willow Warbler added three to the year list. I tried photographing through my scope again with limited success. It was really very misty this morning and the birds were distant. More excuses !
