The Garrison Trail

Friday October 16
Another late start for The Garrison via Porthcressa and the Sallyport steep steps and tunnel through the ramparts. What a relief to reach the top and rest at the first Battery, basking in warm sunshine.

Pam had a pleasant conversation with a couple of birders and another with a couple we met at Lower Broome platform - no sign of the Yellow-browed. The Porthcressa Bay looked lovely in the sunshine.

We then spent some time at Morning Point before finally settling at a bench just past the Woolpack Battery. There we sat for at least an hour and a half watching Gannets diving in the St Agnes channel, and our first October Wheatear. A Stonechat eyed us from the rocky edge and a Kestrel flew in off the sea. It was most interesting to watch a fisherman haul in his pots directly in front of us.Most of the crabs were returned to the sea, he kept just three reasonably sized ones plus a couple of lobsters. The ropes were heavily festooned with seaweed which he had to rub off.
We meandered back, making our way down via the Tregarthen steps , again enjoying the views through the Garrison Gate and.....

of the harbour and The Scillonian about to depart for Penzance.
